Beginners Guide to MetaMask — Creating your first Ethereum Crypto Wallet [2021]

Today we’re looking at how you can create your own Cryptocurrency wallet on the Ethereum network.
Key concepts to understand in this guide are:
- Ethereum: At its core, Ethereum is a decentralised blockchain with smart contract functionality. As well as being a currency, its a platform and ecosystem on which thousands of decentralised applications (such as Chainlink and Uniswap) have been built on.
- Wallet Addresses: All crypto is stored on a wallet or address on their respective chains and networks. Ethereum wallet addresses consist of a generated 42 character hexadecimal string. We’ll talk about addresses more in the guide below.
- Seed Phrases: An important component of your wallet set-up, Ethereum wallet seed phrases consist of 12 randomly generated words which you’ll need to remember in case you ever need to recover your wallet.
So, what is a crypto wallet?
Essentially a crypto wallet is a software or hardware wallet which is used to store cryptocurrencies. A software wallet can be accessed on your phone via an app or through an extension via an internet browser such as Google Chrome (which we will be looking at today).
